The World Wide Web (www) is growing at and exponentially rate. Everything is being entered and sorted into the web. As the technologies are getting better, we are starting to see the Web as the ‘computer interface’.
Microsoft Windows dominates the personal computer operating system market, but as we move forward I think we are going to see less operating system specific programs and more web based applications. Part of this move is going to be caused by the move to a more mobile society.
In the future, all mobile phones will be able to access the web the same way we currently access it on a computer. Currently, the dominating mobile operating systems are: Symbian, Palm, Nokia, Samsung, Windows Mobile, and iPhone; which have different standards to make applications for them. There will be a strong push to web based applications on the phone because it is a lot easier to program an application once then having to rewrite the code for each operating system.
In addition, programming applications on the web is usually universal. As long as the computer you are on has a fairly current web browser, then no matter what system you’re on the website should look the same.
Right now, there are many mobile applications. Google has created their Google Docs, which consist of a document, spreadsheet, and presentation editor. They also offer a calendar and email. Some advantages are that you can access your files anywhere and any time and share them with your friends or co-workers. One of the major disadvantages is concern for security and privacy.
As well as Google apps, we are seeing a big community based ways to communicate. Things like Myspace and Facebook are mobile applications to communicate with one and another. Facebook is really working at displaying information live. For example, you can message a friend and it will pop up on their screen like messenger programs like AIM and MSN Messenger do.
Finally, we are starting to see TV online. Most of the network sites offer their shows to stream online. There are sites like Hulu and Fancast which offer a legal way to view of movies and TV shows for free. If they don't offer the movies your looking for you can always subscribe to Netflix and stream some of their movies online.
In conclusion, Moore's Law would probably agree with me that as technology gets better we are starting to move to a more mobile based society. This is largely due to increase in internet speeds and mobile technologies. There are many applications that already run off the web and are replacing operating system applications.
